Ashley Foods Chili Peppers

We don’t grow every type of chili found under the sun.

For a start, we don’t have the room. And secondly, we know where to get some good chilies to support local businesses. But there are chilies that are just too important to our Mad Dog sauces that we need to produce ourselves. At the moment, we’ve got:

Yellow Moruga – The Trinidad moruga scorpion is native to an area of Trinidad and Tobago is known as Moruga. In 2012, these were identified by New Mexico State University as the hottest peppers on earth. They tend to fall around 1.2 million on the Scoville scale though a few individual plants often make it past the 2 million mark. Scorpions can be red, orange, or yellow as well grow on our farms.

Carolina Reaper – You know this chili because it’s the current reigning titleholder for the hottest chili on earth. It averages around 1.5 million Scoville though peppers have been recorded at 2.2 million Scoville of scorching heat. We use these babies in our Mad Dog 357 Reaper Sriracha hot sauce (which you have to try).

Peach Reaper Ghost Scorpion – Farmers and horticulturists, don’t just stumble on new chili peppers; they are bred. Crossing different strains is exactly how we get new, super hot chilies. And, we’ve got a super incredible new hybrid we’re busy harvesting at the moment. First, there was a mix of the Ghost pepper with the Scorpion. And now, we’ve taken the peach-colored Ghost Scorpion and mixed it with a Reaper. Sound incredible? We think so too.

We’ve just begun our harvest. At the moment, we’ve picked over 800 pounds of chili peppers, and we’re not even 10% through our fields. That’s one hell of a harvest no matter how you look at it. And guess what? We can’t use all of these peppers for our super hot sauces. That means we’ve got chili peppers for sale. All you need to do is get in touch. (Oh, and if you’re in the area and you want to sneak a peek at our fields, just let us know. We can always use an extra hand in the fields. Just kidding.)

Fresh Chili Peppers for Sale

The most important parts of any hot sauce are the chili peppers that go in them. That goes almost without saying, doesn’t it? Except, it’s difficult to procure the right chili peppers from the local grocery store; it’s even harder to find them at the larger chain supermarkets.

Where Do Chili Peppers Come From?

There are two ways to get the chilies needed to make super hot sauces like those in the Mad Dog 357 range. The easier option is to get your chili peppers direct from the farmers themselves. Commercial chili pepper farmers spend a lot of time in the fields planting, watering, protecting, and harvesting.

The alternative is to grow the peppers yourself. This is the less expensive option, for sure. It’s also the best way to ensure you get exactly the chili peppers that your hot sauces need. But, it’s an intensive process. Still, it’s one that we favor at Ashley Foods, and that’s why we have incredible fields of chilies that we harvest every year.
