Tortilla chips are everywhere. Indeed, you can’t walk into your average American casual restaurant without finding them somewhere on the menu. It’s becoming a global trend these days with tortilla chips becoming ever more popular. In fact, tortilla chips are so ubiquitous that we almost don’t notice them anymore.
Perhaps that’s why there’s an entire day dedicated to celebrating them – February 24th.
The Cultural Significance of Tortilla Chips
The creation of tortilla chips is hardly surprising. With an abundance of full tortillas on their way to becoming stale, you’ve got to do something right? How about cutting them into wedges, frying them, and serving them with salsa? That’s exactly what happened.
And then they spread like wildfire, out of the kitchens of Mexico and onto the shelves of grocery stores around the country.
According to statistics, some 75% of American households purchase and consume tortilla chips. Although these may be an occasional snack, there are days when their consumption is almost mandatory… such as during the Super Bowl. In preparation for the big day in 2015, Americans purchased about $20.1 million worth of tortilla chips and consumed about 8.2 million pounds of these tasty treats.
That’s a lot of tortilla chips.
The Good Thing about Tortilla Chips
With the huge number of tortilla chips consumed every year, you kind of have to ask yourself why. If you were to ask, though, you’d probably get as many answers as there are tortilla chips consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. But, we can guess that most of those answers fall into the category of their utility… you know, as a vehicle to move sauces, salsas, dips, and chilies to one’s mouth.
And, that’s probably why we love them most too. And, if you’re looking for a way to celebrate National Tortilla Chip Day on February 24th, you’ll want to take a look at some of our favorites.
